Spare the Young Fish: Optimal Harvesting Policies for North-East Arctic Cod
نویسندگان
چکیده
The North-East Arctic cod (Gadus morhua) fishery, as most other commercial fisheries, is wasting the larger part of its potential. Examining a detailed multi-cohort, multigear bioeconomicmodel, we show that the cause is rather a too smallmesh size than excessive effort. Although internationally and nationallymanaged by quota allocations and regulations, the current exploitation pattern implies that essentially the wrong fish are targeted. Catching older and heavier fish could double the fishery’s Net-Present-Value. This increases harvested biomass while it reduces the number of fish removed from the ocean, highlighting the importance of ageand gear-specific modeling. Moreover, optimal harvesting policies would also lead to a much more robust and abundant cod stock.

The growing value of age : Exploring economic gains from age - specific harvesting in the North - East Arctic cod fishery
The importance of the fish stock’s age-structure is increasingly recognized in economics and ecology. Still, current policies predominately rely on measures of the aggregate biomass. Here, a detailed bio-economic model is calibrated on the North-East Arctic cod fishery to assess the efficiency gains from controlling gear selectivity and explore them under a suite of different scenarios. While t...

North-East Arctic cod is shared by Russia and Norway. Taking its multi-cohort structure into account, how would optimal management look like? How would non-cooperative exploitation limit the obtainable profits? To which extent could the strategic situation explain today’s over-harvesting? Simulation of a detailed bioeconomic model reveals that the mesh size should be significantly increased, re...
متن کاملTowards the Optimal Management of the Northeast Arctic Cod Fishery
The objectives pursued by governments managing fisheries may include maximizing profits, minimizing the impact on the marine ecosystem, or securing employment, which all require adjusting the composition of the fishing fleet. We develop a management plan that can be adapted to those objectives and allows the regulator to compare the long-run profits between the various management options. We ap...
متن کاملPopulation growth across heterogeneous environments: effects of harvesting and age structure
Population growth is affected by several factors such as climate, species interaction and harvesting pressure. However, additional complexity can arise if fishing increases the sensitivity to environmental variability. To predict the effects of fisheries and climate on marine populations, there is a need for improved understanding of how they affect key ecological processes such as population g...

BACKGROUND Concentrations of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are reported to increase in marine ecosystems. OBJECTIVES Characterize exposure to BFRs in animals from different trophic levels in North-East Atlantic coastal marine ecosystems along a latitudinal gradient from southern Norway to Spitsbergen, Svalbard, in the Arctic. Calanoid species were collected from the Oslofjord (59 degrees...
